Is Hair Transplant Surgery Suitable For Younger Patients?

Hair transplant surgery is not advised for patients who are younger than 25 when they are suffering from androgenetic alopecia, otherwise known as male pattern baldness.

This is the case for two very important reasons. Firstly, a person of this age will have an unpredictable donor area. It takes time for the hair loss to settle down and allow for a surgical decision to be made.

Secondly, the earlier in life that male pattern baldness begins, then the more extensive it will usually become.

How Do We Predict Donor Area Stability?

For hair transplant surgery to be successful a stable donor hair area is required. The donor area is usually the area on the back and sides of the scalp where hair follicles are not usually affected by a product of testosterone, known as DHT.

DHT is a hormone that causes susceptible hair follicles to shrink and eventually to stop growing completely. When you undergo a hair transplant, hair is inserted that has not been affected by this.

In a person aged under 25 it is usually very difficult to determine how stable the usual donor areas will be over time. Because of the age of the person, it’s impossible to tell if the donor area will be resistance to the effects of DHT in the longer term.

Therefore the younger you are, the more likely it will be that you will have to wait before undertaking hair transplant surgery. Your first stop should be a reputable advisory service and your doctor, before talking about her transport surgery.

The Earlier You Start Losing Your Hair The Earlier You Will Go Completely Bald

This is generally the case. When you start losing hair at a young age then you are more likely to suffer from extensive hair loss in your life.

Unfortunately this can mean that there will not be enough donor hair to cover the bald area as it stands now. Therefore a hair transplant procedure will only mask the problem for a few years and may exacerbate it in the long term.

In this case, medical options, non-surgical hair replacement and other treatment options such as laser hair therapy may be worth exploring. In some cases your hair loss can be stabilized with treatment and if the stabilization holds over time then you can comfortably consider a hair transplant if you will continue treatment to your existing hair.

If you are a young person suffering from premature hair loss then it’s worth speaking to an expert to see what your options are. Baldness in young people can be extremely depressing and distressing, therefore it is essential that you get good advice as soon as possible.
